That\u2019s how TV characters lead. Do you recognize yourself? <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

How do you lead a rebellion? How do you coach a mediocre football team? And how do you run a successful fashion magazine? Film and television plots are full of leadership roles. Faktor A takes a look at six leaders from film, television, and streaming. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Miranda Priestly from *The Devil Wears Prada* and Ted Lasso from the eponymous series\u2014two film and TV characters frequently cited in leadership seminars as striking examples of their respective leadership styles\u2014are currently making a comeback. Taking these new releases as a starting point, *Faktor A* explores well-known characters and their leadership styles. What defines their actions, and how do they interact with the people around them? What matters to them? How effective is their work in their leadership roles? <\/p>\n

Of course, no TV character comes with a complete instruction manual for effective leadership. And most characters\u2014like most real-life leaders\u2014are not simply black or white, <\/strong>nor are they locked into a single style. Nevertheless, leaders can derive real value from the following list\u2014and the films and series on which it is based. <\/p>\n

Jean-Luc Picard: the democratic-participatory leadership style<\/h2>\n

Jean-Luc Picard is the captain of the USS Enterprise\u2014no easy task, given the complex situations depicted in the sci-fi series *Star Trek: The Next Generation*. Picard meets these challenges with a leadership style that can be described as democratic and participatory. He involves the extended leadership team and the crew in decision-making processes; he listens and actively encourages the participation of his personnel <\/a>on the Enterprise. In doing so, he fosters a work culture where individuals take responsibility <\/strong>and have the scope to make independent decisions when necessary.<\/strong> The success of his Enterprise vindicates his approach. <\/p>\n

Other figures with a democratic-participatory leadership style: Leslie Knope (Parks and Recreation) and Aragorn (The Lord of the Rings).<\/p>\n

Leia Organa: the visionary leadership style<\/h2>\n

An example from *Star Trek* should naturally be followed by one from *Star Wars*. Princess Leia Organa pursues a clear vision: a free galaxy without Star Destroyers, Death Stars, or the troublesome Empire. To achieve this, she joins the Rebellion and serves as a central leader. In a galaxy fragmented into many factions, she emphasizes common ground and unity. In doing so, she creates a powerful sense of purpose <\/strong>that helps foster the intrinsic motivation<\/a> of every single individual. She declares: “That means a free galaxy for you.” Clear and compelling. And since this vision is far superior to the Imperial status quo, she is able to mobilize the people\u2014and other inhabitants of the galaxy\u2014for the Rebel cause, leading to the well-known outcome at the Battle of Endor. <\/p>\n

Other figures with a visionary leadership style: Morpheus (The Matrix) and Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games).<\/p>\n

Professor Minerva McGonagall: der transformationale F\u00fchrungsstil<\/h2>\n

Minerva McGonagall teaches at Hogwarts. At this school\u2014known from the *Harry Potter* book and film series\u2014children with magical aptitude are trained to become wizards and witches. Such training always entails personal growth:<\/strong> students expand their knowledge and acquire practical skills. As an educator, Professor McGonagall powerfully embodies these aspects of transformation. She is strict but fair; she challenges her students while also nurturing their potential. In doing so, she acts as a driving force behind the personal transformation of her magical charges. The close link between transformation and vision is evident in her character through the early preparations she makes to confront the future threat posed by “You-Know-Who.” <\/p>\n

Other characters with a transformational style: John Keating (*Dead Poets Society*) and Professor Charles Xavier (*X-Men*).<\/p>\n

Mr. Miyagi: the coaching leadership style<\/h2>\n

“Wax on, wax off.” This simple exercise plays a central role in the system taught by karate master Nariyoshi Keisuke Miyagi in the film *The Karate Kid*. It not only instills the fundamental motor skills of defense in his student, Daniel, but also offers a mental dimension: Daniel learns discipline and patience. Furthermore, he gains personal insights that encourage reflection. Mr. Miyagi\u2019s training aims not primarily at developing athletic prowess, but at character development.<\/strong> The goal is not to become the best karate fighter, but a responsible one. <\/p>\n

Other characters with a coaching style: Dr. Niklas Ahrend (*In aller Freundschaft*) and Wendy Rhoades (*Billions*).<\/p>\n

Ted Lasso: the servant leadership style<\/h2>\n

Ted Lasso, from the series of the same name, is also a coach. However, he places the needs and development of others\u2014specifically the players of the fictional AFC Richmond\u2014at the very heart of his work. He views leadership not as a tool of power, but as a service to his team<\/strong>; for him, the individual is paramount. Ted Lasso builds trust, encouraging those around him to open up, and takes a genuine interest in their struggles so that he can help them. When people are doing well, they play good football\u2014provided, of course, that they possess the necessary athletic skills. Ted Lasso\u2019s focus on the individual extends to himself as well: the tension between his job in London and his family in Kansas forms the central thread of the series. <\/p>\n

Other characters with a servant leadership style: Queen Ramonda (Black Panther) and Leslie Higgins (also from Ted Lasso).<\/p>\n

Miranda Priestly: the authoritarian-directive leadership style<\/h2>\n

In *The Devil Wears Prada*, Miranda Priestly rules over every corner of the *Runway* fashion magazine’s offices. She calls the shots and brooks no dissent.<\/strong> Dialogue and participation play no part in her leadership style. While her system works\u2014after all, *Runway* is the world\u2019s most important fashion magazine\u2014it is entirely dependent on her personally. The consequences are that employees cannot make their own decisions; they must consult Miranda on every issue. The repercussions of this leadership style are addressed in the current sequel: a consulting firm is brought in to whip the magazine\u2019s management into shape. And, almost in passing, Miranda Priestly reveals to her closest colleague\u2014and the audience\u2014something she failed to achieve during her years as a publishing queen: being there as her children grew up. <\/p>\n

Other characters with an authoritarian-directive leadership style: Tywin Lannister (Game of Thrones) and Bernd Stromberg (Stromberg).<\/p>\n
