What is the wider context of the assignment? What opportunities will arise after their return?

Planning should be even more thorough when partners are involved and take on the role of an accompanying partner.

In view of the extensive research on this subject, it is now considered proven that accompanying partners play a decisive role in both the success and failure of an international assignment. There are several reasons for this:

Success Factors

Accompanying partners are willing to support their expatriate partners in their role and position abroad, freeing them up to focus on their responsibilities.

Accompanying partners take care of household and family responsibilities, such as caring for and supporting children or other family members who also move abroad.

Accompanying partners have a positive attitude towards the destination country and the international assignment and successfully navigate the cultural adjustment process.

⇒ These factors are more likely to contribute to the success of the international assignment

Factors Contributing to Failure

In dual-career couples, accompanying partners agree to give up their jobs or put their professional careers on hold when relocating abroad together.

This can create potential conflict within the relationship due to the dissatisfaction and lack of fulfilment accompanying partners may experience in their new role.

Accompanying partners may have difficulties adjusting culturally to the destination country and/or coping with the consequences of the international assignment.

⇒ These factors can have a negative impact and are more likely to contribute to the failure of the international assignment.

For dual-career couples in particular, the negative factors tend to be more prominent. Accompanying partners move from a situation in which they are financially independent, professionally fulfilled and have promising prospects to one in which they depend on their partners and struggle to find a meaningful occupation of their own in the destination country. This can have a negative effect on their self-esteem.

Remote Work as a Solution?

Remote Work as a Solution?

The opportunity to work from anywhere appears to be the perfect solution to the dilemma dual-career couples face during an international assignment. Accompanying partners working in fields that allow them to work from home can continue their professional activities remotely and independently of location while living abroad.

The Following Factors Are Crucial:

Egalitarian social roles: Continuing to work and develop a career is particularly important to the younger generations (Generations Y and Z), especially to women.

Technological development: From a technological perspective, working remotely and independently of location is no longer a problem.

Legal issues: Many countries now offer special digital nomad visas or digital nomad residence permits for remote workers.

Employer attractiveness: Companies are increasingly enabling remote work to remain attractive as employers and are placing greater emphasis on flexibility.

Expectations of Generations Y and Z: Younger generations expect this flexibility from their employers.

Rethinking international assignments: The assignment itself can also be designed differently—not as a long-term arrangement, but as a shorter one, potentially divided between on-site and remote phases to accommodate dual-career couples. This option also reflects the need for companies to offer as much flexibility as possible.

The option of remote work in the context of an international assignment is a good solution for dual-career couples. However, its implementation depends on the willingness of the companies involved to resolve legal, tax and insurance-related questions in a satisfactory and constructive manner.

Challenges of Remote Work During an International Assignment

Some of the challenges associated with remote work during an international assignment have already been mentioned. The following provides an overview:

Legal issues: Visa requirements, work permits, taxation and insurance matters relating to remote work by accompanying partners during an international assignment must be examined carefully.

Employment status: Will the accompanying partner remain employed or work on a freelance basis? What consequences would the latter have for them?

Self-employment: Depending on the type of work, special digital nomad visas or digital nomad residence permits often provide legal residence status. However, the specific tax and insurance implications still need to be examined carefully.

Social isolation: Remote work can be lonely and may negatively affect cultural adjustment and social integration into both the local and expatriate communities in the destination country. Successful cultural adjustment and integration require measures such as participating in local networks and learning the local language.

Different time zones: Time differences and time zones can make collaboration with the existing team more challenging.

Summary: Remote Work & Expatriation

Remote work should not be idealised, as numerous obstacles must be overcome before this model can be used in the context of an international assignment. Nevertheless, it is an attractive option for accompanying partners to consider, as it can help reconcile professional ambitions with the desire to live and work in another country.
